The Gears of Stars

As the initial idea is to have 5 levels and 15 stars in total, now with the change to 3 levels, I need to come up with a specific level structure (from the beginning plot to the end plot, how will my game work). In my planning, Wendy will come out in the middle of the game, Bella and Devin's integration is happening near the finish, and Bella and Wendy's integration is at the finish point.

Then I need to decide, how many stars have to be collected so the players can see the integrations. In the beginning, I set the stars needed to 4 and 7, which 4 representing the integration between Bella and Devin and 7 standing for Bellan and Wendy's integration. So that the players can unlock these after level 2 and level 3.

However, I thought if I simply did this, then the players have no need to go back to the levels after they finished. As a result, I changed the first gear to 3 stars to make the players feel easier to get and set one of the stars in level 1 cannot be collected. To achieve this, I arranged a monster guarding in front of the star in level 1. So that if the players want to collect all of the stars, they may come back to level 1 after they unlock Wendy. At the same time, with more powers, the players may feel a sense of strength and growth.

The Game Flow

To make my story into a game, I divided my storyboard into different sections.

The Introduction

This part is to give the players a basic introduction to the game's story and background. The players will see through Molly's eyes in the beginning and take over the control of Bella after Molly faints. Simple interactions are provided in this section.

The Tutorial

As the second personality Devin comes out in this stage, it's suitable for this part of the story to be a tutorial level. The different perspectives of views between the two personalities can be seen clearly and let the players get used to my game's basic mechanics. Players will learn how to control the different personalities and their unique abilities for later applying them in the following levels.

Level 1 - The Broken Heart

At the beginning of level 1, players will control Bella after she comes back from the dream about the valley. From this point, Bella (the player) starts to collect the stars. Devin's jumping ability is also needed at this level.

Level 2 - Out of Order

At the end of level 2, when the player reaches the rooftop area, Wendy will come out.

Bella & Devin's Integration

Normally, players will get more than 3 stars after they complete the first 2 levels and they can go into the integration of Bella and Devin. After the integration, they can choose one to use for the following levels and they will get the abilities integrated too.

Level 3 - The Maze

At this level, the players continue to use the abilities of each personality to pass through.

Bella & Wendy's Integration

After the players get 7 stars, they can unlock the plot where Bella and Wendy finally integrated.

The Last Scene

After the final integration, Molly is back and the whole tone of her bedroom will be changed to bright.

The Levels Structure Diagram

In general, players can choose their own pace for this game. They can either stay longer and collect all the stars in each level or quickly go through them and come back to collect the stars that are needed.
