Blog Entry 26 - [FRUIT, BOOM!] Brainstorm the In-game Props

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

Props are a really important aspect of this party game, as a designer, I would want the players to have different experiences in each different gameplay. At this stage, I and my teammate decided to each come up with several ideas for the props and we will decide what to use together.

I divided my idea of the props into 3 main categories, they are small pick-up items in the game, large interactable props in the scene and the ideas of non-interactable scene props. I will talk about them in the following paragraphs.

Ways to get the props in our game:

  • shooting other players

  • shooting objects in the scene (tree, bush and other scene objects...)

  • there will be props rain during a fixed time period(during 5, 10, 15 minutes)

Numbers of the props in our game:

I went for a little research about how many props the party games usually have. It turns out that Mario Kart 8 has 16 (excluding those that have the same functions), Rubber Bandits has 20 (all weapons to pick up) and Pummel Party has 15.

As a result, it should be better for us to keep the props under 20 and I think it's proper to reduce them to 10 as we already have many other scene objects that are interactable, it would be too much if we have plenty of the props and the players will find hard to remember them, that will bring negative effect to our game.

Small pick-up items

Used on others:

  • the Transfiguration Powder

    • player A can pick up it and use it on any other players (assume player B)

    • player B will become the appearance of player A (lasts for 15 seconds)

    • usefulness: can create confusion for other players and avoid player A himself from being attacked

  • the Fruit-peeler

    • player A can place it in front of player B (with a little distance so that that player can have seconds to react and avoid bad counterplay)

    • if player B is tripped, then his juice will fall on the ground

    • usefulness: can keep the leading players on their toes

  • the Steam

    • player A can use it to block player B's vision for 3 seconds

    • usefulness: when battling with another player, he can use it to make an advantage for himself

  • the Confusion Glasses

    • player A can use it to make player B's left and right directions reverse

    • usefulness: can make the other player difficult to run away

  • the Hammer

    • player A can use it to switch the position with player B

    • usefulness: can be very useful while trying to run away

  • the Expanding Powder

    • player A can use it on player B, and player B immediately becomes 1 times fatter (the height remains the same, otherwise it is an advantage)

    • usefulness: can be very useful while the opponent is trying to run away

Used on themselves:

  • the Oil

    • player A uses it and he can have half-time of the weapon cooling down

    • lasts for 30 seconds

    • cool down time change from 2 seconds to 1 second

  • the Poncho (plastic wrap)

    • player A can protect his juice from being polluted by the dish soap rain

    • lasts for 10 seconds

  • the Shrink Powder

    • player A can change himself to 1 time thinner

    • usefulness: can be very useful when running away or dodging an enemy attack

Other In-Game Props:

  • the Basket

    • Block attacks from other players (only limited to weapon attacks? This will be restrained by other props, otherwise invincible)

    • placed on the player's head

    • can be snatched by other players

    • cannot attack when having the basket on the head
