Blog Entry 7 - [Four Me] BrainStorming(2)

Updated: Mar 2, 2023

As I brainstormed last week about all the aspects I can think about around IMPULSE, I came up with another exciting idea this week.

The Idea

I've always wanted to design a game with a story and different camera perspectives, some space transformation. Combined with the novel 'The Minds of Billy Milligan' and some videos I've seen before, I quickly came out with a story with the main character who has DID (dissociative identity disorder), during her(as DID often is found in female groups) journey, several personalities will come out and at last, those personalities will be merged)

As personalities come out mainly because the person was under pressure or anxiety, the new personality acts as a person to protect the original person. In this game, I will use storytelling to show this.

As DID is often caused by childhood trauma, all those events that happened acts as a force that pushes the person to split into many personalities. This is how my game relates to the term 'Impulse'.

A Rough Timeline(will be refined later)

  • Level 1: only herself(the major personality), something happened to her when she was a little girl. At the end of this level, an older boy comes out in order to help her go through the trouble.

  • Level 2-4: At the end, she continues facing trouble and a mom-aged woman comes out

  • Level 6: She realises that she has DID and wants to be cured. Under some medical guidance, she decides to face the problems.

  • Level 6-10: she goes back to the previous level scenes and starts to see things differently. At last, she succussed to merge the personalities

Difference between the Different Personalities

  • See things differently

  • have a different appearance

  • different voice

  • different animations

  • different characteristics

The Camera

Personality 1 (view from the back)

  • see the game world in 3D

  • can see the front view

Personality 2 (view from the side)

  • see the game world in 2D/2.5D

  • can see the side view

Personality 3 (view from front)

  • see the game world in 3D(but a lot of constraints)

  • can see the back

  • can be used in storytelling perspectives

Game Play Mechanics

In the levels, there will be scenes where need help from other personalities, so the player needs to change to other personalities in order to complete the level

Target Group

people who want to learn more about DID or like story-based games or just play for fun
